So I was thinking this morning... You know that thing that Biden said last week about the world testing Obama in his first few months as president? (that I noticed McCain and Palin jumped on right away, while Obama was looking like he was sorry about his choice for a running mate) Then it came out that Colin Powell or someone had said something similar, and Joe Lieberman had pointed out a few months ago that Al Quaeda had tested George W. and Clinton both shortly after they took office.
Well, I was thinking about that, and I was thinking, if I was Al Quaeda, why not attack now, sometime in the next couple of weeks? Maybe even on election day? I would think America is very vulnerable right now, with a lame duck presdient, and everyone divided, and the economy going crazy. I would think if you wanted to spread chaos and fear, now would be a pretty good time to do it. Then all those other countries we're worried about right now, like Russia, would also have a good opportunity to take whatever action they're planning. I don't know enough about world politics for any specifics, but it seems to me things could get really messy really fast.
So that's what's on my mind this morning. What do you think? If someone was going to do something, why would they wait? (unless they are like a lot of people I know, who are certain Obama's going to be assisinated within his first few months of being president by the KKK or someone, in which case, that would probably be a good time too).
This is what my dad said:
Interesting question! It would certainly make sense to attack America at a time of crisis or distraction, but that time is not yet. As bad as the left makes our economy look, it's not really that bad. That's more of an election stunt on the part of the left. Unemployment has risen, but not to extreme levels. In fact, times were far worse under Jimmy Carter, with both employment and inflation in double figures. We're actually in pretty good shape, with a diverse economy and good economic roots. For the time being. Also, our security apparatus is still strong, and still focused externally, meaning al Quaida, et al are still going to have a tough time hitting us on our own soil.
At this point it makes more sense for them to hit someone else, especially in the mideast, especially in Afghanistan and Iraq. Strikes in either place are quickly reported in US media and tend to work against McCain and in support of Obama. An Obama administration is much more likely to focus on internal "enemies" and abandon such places as Iraq (and Israel), allowing freer rein for mideast terrorists. At that point it might be worthwhile to stage an attack on American soil, but for now it's both cheaper and easier to strike elsewhere. And of course, the test Biden and others refer to will probably not directly involve US territory anyway, but will definitely involve our interests in the mideast: Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, and the old Soviet Islamic border states (Georgia, Kazakhstan, etc.).
